The recent executive decision to cut legal representation for nearly 26,000 undocumented immigrant children is a direct attack on juvenile justice and the fundamental rights of vulnerable youth. These children, many of whom arrived in the United States unaccompanied and are fleeing violence, poverty, or persecution, now face the terrifying reality of going through immigration court alone. Some are as young as two or three years old, expected to stand before a judge, often with an interpreter in their ears, trying to understand and respond to complex legal questions.

Without legal assistance, these children are at a massive disadvantage and are far more likely to be deported, even when they have legitimate claims for asylum or humanitarian protection.

This is a clear violation of the principles of juvenile justice, which are meant to protect young people in vulnerable circumstances. In any just legal system, children are recognized as needing special care, guidance, and support—not punishment or abandonment. Denying immigrant children legal representation denies them a fair chance to be heard and strips away their ability to exercise their basic rights. It treats them not as children in need, but as problems to be removed. This contradicts not only international human rights standards but also the values that many Americans believe the justice system should uphold.

These cuts don’t just reflect a policy change—they represent the moral decadence of the American legal system. The legal process is already difficult for adults, let alone children who may not speak English, may be traumatized, and may not even understand why they’re in court. Without lawyers, their voices are silenced and their futures are placed at risk. Ensuring legal representation for undocumented immigrant youth is not about politics; it’s about justice, fairness, and recognizing that every child, no matter where they come from, deserves to be treated with dignity and humanity.
